With our families, with our friends, and with our neighbors. We are taking the first step to prevent domestic violence. So can you.
So if we all care about domestic violence, why does it still exist? There are many reasons (link to get informed), but one is simply because it’s so hard to talk about. Often, people dealing with domestic violence feel shame, are afraid to tell anyone what they’re experiencing, or think they’re the only ones going through it. As a community, we often feel that these issues are none of our business and are private family matters, or feel that there is nothing we can do to create change.
But we know that family, friends and neighbors are the first to know when domestic violence is going on. So it is all of us, in our role as family, friends and neighbors who can be the most effective in:
* reaching out,
* talking about this issue in public to bring more awareness,
* letting those affected by it know that they have support,
* and in encouraging the rest of the community to take action to prevent domestic violence.
