Close to Home began when a local group of neighbors recognized domestic violence as an important issue in their community, and gathered together to do something about it. These first neighbors worked hard to publicize the impact and effects of domestic violence on individual lives and on the community, and make domestic violence intervention and prevention a public, priority concern.
The work done by network of local residents involved with Close to Home continues to evolve as new members bring their personal experiences and areas of expertise and interest. Some have joined because they are hoping to learn more about domestic violence and ways that it impacts their neighborhoods, others have heard domestic violence going on with neighbors next door and aren’t sure how to respond, and others have been directly impacted by domestic violence and are seeking support or resources. The community residents have shared with Close to Home the areas that they would like to see developed in domestic violence prevention work. They want to help build a stronger, safer community, and that to do that, they strive to build connections with one another through celebrations as well as neighborhood conversations about domestic violence. The resident network works on various projects and events based on the individual strengths and interests of its members. The focus has included learning ways to identify domestic violence, ways to reach out to others affected by domestic violence, ways to share information about domestic violence resources with others, as well as ways to build stronger bonds with their neighbors.
